Scarcity of Dwellings at Denaby Main

Mr. C. W. Ball, solicitor, applied on behalf of the Denaby Main Colliery Company for ejectment warrants against four of the cottagers. Their names were William Lowe, Thomas Middleton, George Hickliffe, and Matthew Grindle.

James Cramp, agent for the Denaby Main Coal Company, said he had served notices to quit on the persons named, who occupied houses under the Company, on July 5th.

Lowe said he had been trying, during the last seven or eight weeks, to get a house, but could not find one empty. He had been in the employ of the colliery company, but they had stopped him.

The Chairman: They apparently wish for possession of the house.

Lowe: I want time to get one.

The Chairman: An order for ejectment will be issued, and you will have to pay the costs.

Another defendant similarly complained that there were no cottages to let, and Grindle said he did not know why the company wanted him to turn out of the house.

The Chairman: Ask them, if you like. (Laughter.)

A similar order for ejectment, with costs, was made in each case.
