Drunk at Barnburgh.

Ralph Smith, barman, Conisborough, was charged with having been drunk at Barnburgh at the Plumber’s Arms on the 30th July.

Inspector Barrett, Mexborough, said that on the day named he found the defendant drunk in the Plumber’s Arms. He was almost helpless and could not walk. He was asleep when witness entered the house, but he awakened him and he fell on his knees. Police-constable Kendall corroborated.

Albert Thornhill, waggonette driver, stated that he drove defendant along with several others to Barnburgh. He left Denaby about 10 o’clock. Later in the day he returned with the party to Denaby, but it did not include defendant.

Cross-examined, he said he never saw him take any drink.

Defendant entered the box and stated that he was not drunk. He had not tasted beer since Sunday at 3.30.

Mary Ann Reynolds stated that defendant, along with some others, came to their house. He went out as soon as he came. Witness next met defendant in the Plumber’s Arms about 6.30. They all went there at 6.30 and stayed till 8. Defendant never tasted any drink. He had had sufficient when he came.

Fined 20s., including costs.
