A Conisboro’ Assault

Jenia Jellands, Conisboro’, was summoned for having committed an assault upon Sarah Ann Swift, at that place, on March 25th.

Complainant said that on the date in question at three p.m. she was in the backyard, which was common to both her and the defendant’s houses. The latter alleged that complainant, who had been a teetotaller for four years, got drunk, with the contents of a box (produced), which was one of those supplied for collecting funds in aid of the Doncaster Infirmary. Defendant also attempted to strike her with a chair.

George Swift (complainant’s nephew), and Annie Battey, a neighbour, gave evidence in support of complainant.

Defendant said that complainant struck her with a ladle-can, and getting hold of her arm, pulled her out of the house, accompanying her conduct with a volley of bad language.

Complainant said: “I am a member of the Primitive Methodist Chapel, and it is not very likely that I should use such language as has been mentioned.”

The Chairman said the Bench thought that defendant struck the first blow. She would have to be quiet for the next six months, and would be bound over to keep the peace for that period.
