Snips That Survived
I believe last week I asserted rather confidently that Mexboro’ would easily beat Wath, and that Conisboro’ would have a bad time at Platts Common against Hoyland Silkstone. These were the only two instances in which my judgment did not prove at fault—the only two snips that survived. Conisboro’ did have a bad time at Hoyland, and such is my affection for the Conisboro’ club I hesitate to dwell upon the subject. But the truth must be told, and the bald-headed, plain, unvarnished gospel, and unmistakeable truth is that Hoyland Silkstone knocked the stuffing out of Conisboro’, drilled holes through them, and practically speaking, left them for dead.
Conisboro’, who batted first, made eleven, of which four were extras. The remaining seven were shared by three batsmen, Marlborough being top-scorer with four, Martin getting a couple, and Tonge a single. On comparing them with the remainder of the team, I am almost disposed to include them in my weekly list of notable batting performances. The bowlers, Mapplebeck and Hutchinson, who were responsible for this debacle, of course, have their feats enshrined in the proper quarter.
Hoyland Silkstone naturally won the match without losing a wicket, but the Conisboro’ crowd were sportsmanlike enough to continue fielding after they were beaten until Hoyland had lost five wickets for 58 runs. In congratulating Hoyland upon their win, may I protest that it is rather early in the season to start rabbiting.
Hoyland v Conisboro’
