Gambling at Denaby and Mexboro’

There were a number of cases on the charge sheet having reference to gambling. Albert Cotterill, John Moore, fillers; Walter Wellings and Levi Horn, pony drivers; all of Denaby, were summoned for gaming with coins by tossing, at Denaby, on the 8th May.

P.C. Ransom proved the case. He was on duty at 6-15 p.m. on the date in question, in Doncaster road, Denaby, in company with P.C. Richardson, where they saw all the defendants gaming with coins by tossing. They saw money change hands.

P.C. Richardson corroborated.

Cotterill was fined 5s. and the costs, and the others 2s. 6d. and the costs.

Another batch, hailing from Mexboro’, were summoned. Their names are Geo. Bennett, a glass hand; Thomas Nelson, labourer; Thomas Wood, miner; and Edward Thompson, miner, all of Mexboro’.

P.C. Kinder gave evidence to the effect that at 3-40 on Sunday last he was on duty in company with Police-sergeant Goldsborough on the Mexboro’ railway station, when he saw the defendants with a number of others, all gaming with coins. They were near the railway, on a public footpath leading from Mexboro’ to Swinton. They watched them a few minutes, and then went round the station buildings, and the defendants made off.

Nelson said he was at Swinton at the time.

Police-sergeant Goldsborough corroborated Kinder’s evidence. He was sure Nelson was amongst the gamblers.

Arthur Kitchen gave evidence. He said he was with Nelson at Swinton at the time stated by the police constable. He had never gambled in his life.

Bennett and Nelson were fined 5s. and costs; Wood, 2s. 6d. and costs; and Thompson, 7s. 6d. and costs.
