Conisborough Parish Church

Retirement of People’s Warden

The annual parochial meeting in connection with the Conisborough Parish Church, held night, was open to all parish householders, and was held in the Church Hall, Conisborough.

The business included a statement of the church accounts for 1923, and the election of officials. The Vicar (the Rev. W. A. Strawbridge), who presided, said the reason for meeting being called now instead of Easter was that Mr. W. Smith, the esteemed people’s warden, was leaving the town. He said while the vicar very much regretted Mr. Smith was retiring after being headmaster at the Birkby Place School for over thirty years. During the last few years he has been a churchwarden. Mr. Smith was unable to stay in the neighbourhood and it was agreed that the successor should be appointed to take over before Mr. Smith leaves the district.

The accounts showed that the receipts had been £239 (offertories £151), a slight decrease on the previous year’s figures. The balance in hand is £32.

The vicar announced that Mrs. G. T. Nicholson was prepared to continue as vicar’s warden, and he had pleasure in nominating her.

Mr. H. Thirlwall was elected people’s warden in succession to Mr. Smith. The vicar remarked that the position was one of great responsibility, and one in which Mr. Thirlwall’s professional experience might be very useful.

The sidesmen were re-elected with the substitution of Mr. Frank Mason for Mr. Thirlwall.

The representatives to the Doncaster Conference elected were: Mrs. Allport and Mr. Thirlwall to the Ruri-Decanal Conference; Mrs. Allport, Mr. Thirlwall, Mr. Wallace, and Mr. V. Clarkson.

The Free-Will Offering scheme showed a balance in hand of £49.

The Vicar reported that the Charity Commissioners were ready to allot three trustees for Conisborough charities and one for Hooton; to be elected by the Conisborough Urban Council and the Clifton Parish Council respectively.

The Church Council were re-elected, with the addition of Mr. R. J. Clarkson
