Denaby’s Biggest
Denaby 7, Rotherham U. Res. 1
Their 7-1 victory over Rotherham United Reserves was Denaby’s biggest of the season, and they gave their best display. It was a great day for Siddall and Mugglestone.
Siddall’s centres resulted in six goals being scored, though he did not score one. He had the chance but failed with a penalty. He obtained considerable support from Armand and Fitzgerald. Mugglestone had the honour of scoring four of the goals and he and Siddall always troubled the Rotherham defence. Jack Huck returned to lead the attack well. Hagger proved a capable partner for Mugglestone.
The home defence had very little to do owing to the fine work of the half-backs. Wright in the Rotherham goal could not be blamed for any of the shots that passed him. Smith was the better of the backs. Millington at centre-half was the pick of the side, while Hardy was the best forward.
Denaby were dangerous in the first minute. A penalty for hands against Millington resulted in Wright making a great save from Siddall. After ten minutes Siddall rounded Davies and Cuthbert and centred for Huck to turn the ball into the net. Siddall again centred and during a scramble in the goalmouth Mugglestone screwed the ball past Wright.
In Rotherham’s first attack McConnell was unmarked but dallied and Uren intervened. Denaby increased their lead when Mugglestone converted another centre from Siddall. Early in the second half McConnell worked over to the left and centred but Tomkins, standing less than a yard out, completely missed the ball.
Hagger put across a centre which Huck steadied while Mugglestone sent it home to register his first “hat trick” for Denaby. Siddall forced a corner and this was converted by Mugglestone. Siddall put across another centre and this time Hagger scored. The seventh was the result of a long shot from 30 yards out by Skelton.
In the last two minutes Rotherham reduced Denaby’s lead when McConnell beat Astle.
