Denaby United 2 Lincoln City Reserves 1
This match, counting in the Midland League, was played on the Lincoln ground on Saturday in sharp weather, but before only a poor attendance of spectators. The home team gave a trial to no less than five new players.
The visiting team at once started attacking, and both Wedgwood and Walton broke away, being only inches wide. F. Taylor then took away, but though he dribbled everyone, and got within six yards of goal, he missed. Lindley, at length sprinted through, and scored with a long shot, which Cumberland should have saved, and after the score had been equalised, Lindley had a goal disallowed for off-side.
Half-time:—Lincoln City Reserves one goal, Denaby one goal.
Lincoln reopened at a warm pace, but were temporarily forced back, and Wedgwood missed a glorious opening. At the other end, Dulan headed out an ominous shot from Taylor, and racing up the field, Ryan sent the ball past the uprights. The City had by far the best of the play, but Denaby strengthened their defence, and managed to keep them out.
A minute before the finish Denaby went up, and Bentley tapped it first, and scored.
Result:—
Denaby United ………… 2 goals
Lincoln City Res. …….. 1 goal
