Chamber of Trade
Has Made Good Start at Conisbro’—Denaby
Conisbrough and Denaby shopkeepers, by banding together and forming a Chamber of Trade, had not become “magnates of industry and business” but had combined “merely as ordinary people earning an honest living and wishing to work together amicably.”
This was told to over 60 people at last night’s first annual dinner of Conisbrough and Denaby Chamber of Trade, in the Star Hotel, Conisbrough, by Mr. J. A. Booth, J.P.
“In only such a short time of organisation,” he said, “we have done extremely well. Primarily, as a Chamber of Trade we are all intent on working amicably together and with the local authorities. I do hope that in the future we shall develop on more ambitious lines.”
Mr. F. A. Swift, president, said Mr. J. A. Graham had been in Conisbrough that he had been waiting for a long time, and thanks were due to a great extent to the secretary, Mr. D. Ellis, and treasurer, Mr. E. Whyers.
“We want to work with Conisbrough Council as much as we possibly can, and with their departments, and I think they will want to work with us,” he said. “We will do the best we possibly can to the best of our ability to serve the trade and trading interests in the town.”
Chief visitor was Coun. I. Houghton, J.P., Chairman of Conisbrough Urban Council, who wished the Chamber every success and assured them of his help and support whenever possible, as long as he was still a member of the Council.
During the dinner, which was followed by a social, a presentation was made to Mr. Ellis and Mr. Whyers to mark their work in the first six months of the Chamber’s formation.
