Denaby Pays Homage to King
A large and representative congregation attended Denaby Parish Church on Sunday for the memorial service for King George. The service was conducted by the Vicar of Denaby, the Rev. A. W. Roebuck, assisted by the Rev. H. Trodden and the Lay Reader (Mr. T. Holroft). The congregation included representatives of Conisbrough Urban Council, Territorials, Ambulance Brigade, Nurses and Cadets, the Special and Regular Police Force, Scouts and Cubs and other public bodies.
The impressive service began with the introit “O lead me Lord,” and the choir sang a special setting to the 23rd Psalm and the Nunc Dimittis. The Vicar said the King was called to take over great and responsible duties at a crucial moment in the history of our nation and they could thank God that he answered that call and for all that he did during his term of office. He set a great example, and the world must have been tremendously impressed by the terrific amount of respect that was shown for the King by the number of crowned heads and State representatives from other countries, who attended the funeral service last Friday.
The Vicar continued: “May we be inspired by his example and may we go forward under the rule of his daughter, realising our duties not only as members of a great empire, but also as members of the great family of God.”
After the service the parade assembled outside the church and Corps Superintendent C. J. Pickett read to the company a telegram received by Lady Supt. Mrs. Scott, of the Cadet Division, in reply to one she had sent to Princess Margaret (who is their Lady-in-Chief). The telegram thanked the Denaby Cadet Corps for the expression of sympathy, which had been greatly appreciated.
