Five Goal Barrage Sinks United

Worksop Town 5; Denaby United 0.

There were many “representatives” in the crowd at this Central Avenue game in the Sheffield Senior Cup in which Worksop Town played Denaby United, old friends and rivals, for the third time this season.

No doubt the target was Worksop’s young right back, Cliff Linley. He had a good game but by no means as good as he can play, and there was no suspicion that the opposing winger also had an “off” day.

Denaby never recovered from an amazing “Tigers” goal after seven minutes. Young centre forward David Nevin won the scorer. He seemed to get the ball well out to the left of goal and from an impossible angle hit the ball with rocket-like force into the net.

There he had further successes after 12, 36, and 43 minutes.

The fifth goal, which came in the 51st minute, went to the credit of right half, Roy Ellis, a powerful drive from 30 yards, the ball striking the underside of the crossbar and falling into the net.

Lack of Urgency

There was no mistake about Worksop’s superiority. They were always on top except in the last 20 minutes when the “Tigers” five goals in the lead, eased up considerably.

This was not a large game. It was the unpopular Sheffield Senior Cup and one got the impression that, with 0-2-3 on the goalkeeper Whitehead and centre half Johns, they could have played with less urgency and more enthusiasm.

Certainly the score flattered Worksop, though full marks to the goalkeeper.
