Mexborough & Swinton Times – Friday 01 September 1893
Alleged Assault on a Woman by a Denaby Miner.
Martin Coyne, miner, living at Denaby Main, was placed in the dock on a charge of having assaulted a married woman, named Kate Dickinson, on Saturday night.
The prosecutrix stated that she had been to Mexborough to see a sister, and as she was approaching Denaby, along with a female friend, the prisoner accosted her. He got hold of her and indecently assaulted her, while her friend was walking some distance in front. She screamed, and then her friend returned. Because she (prosecutrix) successfully resisted the prisoner, the latter struck and kicked her. She produced a torn dress as proof of the struggle.
Cross-examined by Mr. Baddiley, the prosecutrix said she had known the prisoner for 10 or 12 years. He did not live far from her. He had never insulted her before. The assault was about a quarter past 11 o’clock at night. She was sober; she could not say whether the prisoner was sober. She was married but was not living with her husband; she did not know where he was. She was living with her mother.
A witness named Naomi Drury deposed to seeing the assault.
Cross-examined, she said she had been with the prosecutrix to the Montagu Arms Hotel at Mexborough. She did not know that the prosecutrix was turned out of the Mason’s Arms or any other house that night at Mexborough.
The prisoner was remanded on bail.
