Mexborough & Swinton Times – Saturday 04 June 1904

Alleged Assault at Denaby.

Walter Wm. Preston, collier, Denaby, was summoned by Annie Howell for having assaulted her at the place named on the 23rd May.

Complainant stated that on the date in question, between two and three p.m., she was going down Marr street, New Conisbrough, when she saw the defendant taking his girl aged about 16 to “set about” her (complainant’s) sister. She asked the defendant what was the matter, when he dealt her a blow on the eye.

Mrs. Cusworth and Mrs. Howell (complainant’s mother) gave corroborative evidence.

Defendant pleaded not guilty, stating that complainant struck him, but he did not retaliate. There had been a disturbance between the children, and when he went into the street he saw the complainant and her mother hold off his wife by the hair. He simply pulled her off.

Mrs. Prosser corroborated, adding that she pulled the defendant’s wife away from the complainant and her mother.

Edward Wilks, Charlotte Adamson, and defendant’s wife were also called by the defendant.

The case was dismissed.
