Murderous Assault at Denaby Main

An Irish labourer named Devine, residing in Mexborough, was found seriously injured after an assault near the new coke ovens at Denaby Main Colliery.

He had reportedly argued with another labourer, Irishman, over remarks concerning drunken habits. During the dispute Devine was tripped and thrown heavily to the ground, then allegedly kicked and beaten. Internal inflammation developed and doctors considered his condition critical.

Police arrested a man whose name had not yet been released.
