Taking Care of Safety Lamp.

March 1913

Mexborough & Swinton Times – Saturday 15 March 1913

Taking Care of Safety Lamp.

George Stocks, filler, of Denaby, pleaded guilty to a charge of omitting to take care of his safety lamp.

Mr. Allen said that by the defendant’s negligence his lamp was broken while alight. He was in charge of Stall 134 in the Cadeby Pit, and he placed his lamp in a position whereby it was smashed. The danger in a stall was greater probably than in any other place in the mine, and it behoved people to take very great care. It was only fair to the defendant to say that he admitted carelessness.

Defendant said he thought his lamp was in a safe place.

Mr. Allen reminded the Bench that it was not suggested that the defendant did it deliberately. It was an accident, but, he said, accidents must not happen in a pit.

Stocks was fined 15s. inclusive.
