A Black Record
At Doncaster yesterday, Luke Herbert Wrigley (23), labourer, of no fixed abode, formerly of Denaby, was committed to prison for three months’ hard labour for loitering with intent to commit a felony.
The accused pleaded “Not Guilty.”
Police-constable Land stated that at 1.25 a.m. he was examining property in Brook Square, Conisbrough, when he heard footsteps near the British Legion Club, which stood back from the main street. He saw Wrigley cross the road to a tailor’s shop and then try several doors in the neighbourhood.
When the accused noticed the constable, he ran off but was caught. Wrigley then remarked:
“I am not killing anybody, and I don’t want killing.”
When searched, the constable found in his possession a lump of stone wrapped in a sheet of paper.
Superintendent Minty told the court that Wrigley was a well-known character and had previously been convicted thirteen times for various offences.
Dr. Dunne, the chairman of the bench, after reviewing the prisoner’s record, commented that it was “a very black one for a young man.”
Wrigley was accordingly committed to prison for three months with hard labour.
