Denaby Main Canteen

To Be Opened This Month?

Miners at Denaby Main will shortly be able to enjoy a hot meal at their new canteen, which is nearing completion near the pit.

The cost—about £5,000—will be met by the Miners’ Welfare Commission, but the Colliery Company will run the canteen. It will provide substantial but cheap meals for about 180 people at a time, and will replace the snack bar which has been popular in the pit-yard. There will be hot meals at all times of the day or night, heated storing cupboards being installed to keep the mid-day dinners hot and appetising for later diners. Soup, potatoes, vegetables and meat, a sweet, and a cup of tea or coffee will be provided for about 1s. 1d.

The canteen is nearing completion, and is hoped to be ready for use towards the end of this month. There will be tables, each seating eight, with stools, and modern cooking equipment will ensure well-cooked meals. Besides providing the mid-day meal, the staff of about 18 will work shifts, so that teas, suppers, and breakfasts can be served.

Mr. F. Worth, of Mexborough, who has been in charge of the snack bar, will manage the canteen. The Company have canteens at their Maltby, Dinnington and Rossington pits.
