Denaby Tied in Own Half in Frickley Cup Game

Frickley continued their high standard of football when they beat Denaby United 3-0 in the second qualifying round of the F.A. Cup at South Elmsall on Saturday.

Frickley delighted their supporters with their constructive play. From the kick-off their forwards exploited large gaps created in the Denaby defence and most of the play was concentrated in the United’s half of the field. Davey, in the Denaby goal, covered himself with glory in the first quarter of an hour by keeping his goal intact.

At the other end Ryalls was never really troubled by the subdued Denaby attack, as Dodds never escaped the tight rein of Conroy, who gave a stalwart display at centre half. Wingers Saper and Swaby sparked off several dangerous moves but these were quenched before the ball reached the penalty area by full-backs Bird and Lawley.

The quick tackling of Orange and Sidebottom never gave Denaby’s inside forwards, Oliver and Slater, a chance to show their talents.

Under “Scouts” Eyes

Frickley’s 17-years-old inside left, Eric Swift, who was under observation by representatives of about a dozen clubs, gave an excellent display at inside left. Crompton was a terrier at inside right whose clean robust football blended effectively with the direct Frickley style.

Frickley took the lead after 16 minutes through Rose.

Two minutes after the interval Swift beat three men before slipping the ball back to Orange who scored from just outside the penalty area.

Crompton completed the scoring in the 68th minute.
