Accused of 3 Years Old Safe Robbery
Conisbro’ Man is Further Remanded at Rotherham
A second charge, concerning an alleged post office safe robbery committed nearly three years ago, was preferred against Harry James (33), crane driver, of 34 Harthill Road, Conisbrough, when he appeared on remand at Rotherham Borough Court yesterday.
He had previously been accused of stealing a pair of binoculars from a car in Rotherham last April.
The second charge accuses him of breaking into the Thornhill (Rotherham) sub-post office on December 7th or 8th, 1957, and stealing a safe containing:
£75 National Insurance stamps,
savings stamps worth £143 12s. 4d.,
gift tokens worth £41 1s.,
National Savings certificates worth £65,
premium bonds worth £17,
postal orders worth £165 13s.,
and postage stamps worth £31 7s. 7d.,
to a total value of £539 12s. 1d.
James was further remanded in custody for a week, although his application for bail was not opposed by the police.
Supt. W. Spensley said James had admitted the theft of the binoculars, and had then made a rather long statement in which he admitted being concerned in a number of offences—not committed by him alone—in the borough and surrounding districts.
He had given the police information about where certain property could be found, and it had been found there, the Superintendent added.
