More Conisbro’ Accidents
Brooke Square Scheme Delay

Road accidents in Conisbrough doubled during the past three months, as compared with the same period last year, Conisbrough Road and Home Safety Committee were told on Tuesday.

P./Sgt. L. Stranward said there were 40 accidents—two serious, many of which had occurred on or near the Doncaster–Sheffield Road.

“The blackest spot is the junction of Clifton Hill and Marshall’s Hill. The view is obstructed by a dip in the road, and accidents occur very regularly,”

he said.

The committee instructed their clerk (Mr. R. J. Edwardson) to write to the County Authority, asking for a definite starting date for the proposed improvement scheme at Brooke Square.

Coun. A. E. Tyas said:

“This scheme has been delayed by the County Council. We have written every month since last January, but a start has still not been made.”

It was reported that of the nine accidents involving dogs in Denaby in the past three months all but one occurred in Doncaster Road.

Dog Dangers

The Urban Council will again be asked to enforce a by-law whereby anyone allowing their dogs to stray on the road will be fined.

The committee heard that the County Council think no useful purpose will be served by the erection of either a halt sign or a “keep left” bollard at the Station Road–Doncaster Road junction—scene of two fatalities in recent years.

Coun. Tyas said:

“It seems that accidents have to pile up before anything is done.”

The County Council will be asked to arrange a joint inspection of the area.

“It is hoped to form a panel of speakers, who will give instruction in home safety to members of local clubs and organisations.

People sometimes wait as long as two months to report gas leaks,” said Mr. J. Gregory. “He urged: Gas escapes should be reported immediately. The Board maintain a 24-hour repair service.”
