Well-Known Couple
A “Golden” at Conisbrough
One of the best known amateur musicians in South Yorkshire, Mr. James Castle (73), and his wife Hannah, of 1 Park Road, Conisbrough, will celebrate their Golden Wedding on October 29th.
Mr. Castle has played the violin since he was 11-years-old “and I still have a lot to learn.” It was music that first brought the couple together at Huddersfield in 1908.
Mrs. Castle (73) recalled this week: “James and I met at a light orchestral concert at the Town Hall. We were married two years later.”
Mr. Castle started work in a grocery store. Forty-eight years ago he and his wife moved to Doncaster, when he took a job with an Insurance Society.
Back to His Old Trade
For 23 years Mr. Castle was employed by Doncaster Co-op. He went back to his old trade, and subsequently became manager of grocery departments at Hatfield, Rossington and Warmsworth.
For nine years Mr. and Mrs. Castle ran a grocery and drapery business at Edlington. They sold the business and moved to Conisbrough a few hours before “V.E. Day.”
Music has always played a prominent part in Mr. Castle’s life and he is still a regular member of orchestras at Wombwell and Barnsley.
He conducted an orchestra at Bentley, and one of his pupils, Mr. Robert Proctor (25), of Prior Road, Conisbrough, now plays with the Hallé Orchestra.
Mr. and Mrs. Castle have three children and three grandchildren.
