Selling Coal Without a Weighing Machine

George Wagstaff, carter, of Conisborough, was charged with selling coal without a weighing machine at Mexborough on the 9th inst.

P.C. Code said that on the afternoon of the day named he saw the defendant standing in a cart containing coal, which he was shovelling into the bags of some people who were near by. He saw one woman pay him 1s. 1d. for what purported to be one cwt. of coal. Defendant had no weighing machine and did not weigh the coal.

Defendant stated that he had weighed the first bag and was guessing at the rest. He had bought the coal for his own use and did not intend to sell it.

Superintendent Blake said the defendant was not a registered coal-dealer.

Fined 20s. and 7s. 6d. costs, or 14 days.
