Betting House Charges.
James White, a miner, of Denaby, appeared at Doncaster on Tuesday, charged with keeping a betting house and with using a house for betting purposes. Kate Thompson was charged with assisting in keeping a betting house.
Mr. A. W. Furness, of Rotherham, who appeared for defendants, said the summonses were made on bad information, and pleaded that they should be dismissed. He read through the charges and said they were ambiguous. Mr. Furness referred to a test case which had been dismissed owing to ambiguous phrasing of the charges, and he further pointed out that they could not make charges of two separate offences on one information.
The court agreed Mr. Furness was right in his contention, but decided to adjourn the case for a fortnight for a re-drafting of the summonses.
