Mexborough & Swinton Times – Saturday 03 May 1913
Denaby Co-operators.
Enjoyable Concert.
Under the auspices of the educational department of the Denaby Main Co-operative Industrial Society, Ltd., a tea was held in the Large Hall, Denaby, on Saturday. Members of the society, to the number of 600 assembled, and an enjoyable time was spent. Forty lady members presided at the various tables.
In the evening a concert was held. The chair was taken by Mr. W. H. Chambers, who made a few introductory remarks, appropriate to the occasion.
Mr. T. J. Bayliss, president of the society, made a short speech, and submitted the balance-sheet, which showed the gross profit for the year amounted to £7,122, and there had been distributed to members as dividend £7,698, or £576 more than the prime cost of the goods.
The society had built a number of houses in Denaby, at a total cost of £12,690, and these were let to members. If they wished they might purchase the houses by means of a system of weekly instalments extending over 21 years. At the present time they had 59 houses, 48 of which had been secured by members, who were paying off the balance by weekly instalments. He thought that their system had come as a boon to many of the working-class population of Denaby.
The committee had secured three first-class artistes, Miss Ida Bloor, soprano, Rotherham; Miss Batty, contralto, Denaby; and Mr. G. H. Ditchburn, principal bass, Manchester Cathedral.
The Denaby Main Orchestral Society, under the baton of Mr. Moses Soar, discoursed sweet music between the vocal items. The efforts of the artistes were greatly appreciated, and the large audience showed its enthusiasm in no uncertain manner.
