Denaby Badly Beaten.
York City 5 Denaby United 0
There was only a moderate “gate” on the York ground, when these teams met on Wednesday afternoon, and the spectators were not treated to a very exhilarating exhibition of football. York was the vastly superior side, and the game was rather lacking in excitement.
The opening exchanges were fairly even, but the York passing was not very accurate. As the game proceeded this fault was remedied, and Heath was several times called on to handle.
Lawson eventually beat him from a corner kick, and following this Lomas scored a second goal from a grand centre by Robinson, while Gilbraith put York further ahead with a smart goal from a centre by Black.
The second half was largely a repetition of the first, York doing most of the pressing. The visitors’ forwards were weak, and they made poor use of their chances.
Lamberton scored York’s fourth goal, and Gilbraith the fifth, both from good centres by Lawson.
Undoubtedly the star performer on the visitors’ side was Heath in goal. He played a fine game and brought off some brilliant saves.
The forwards were never allowed any rope, and when they got within the danger zone their shooting was weak.
Patterson and Smith, at half-back, worked hard, as did Swinbourne and Jackson at full-back.
On the York side Atheton, in goal, got through what little work he had to do satisfactorily, and Tindall and Walker were very sound at back.
The halves were good, with Lawson and Wilson (the former especially) the pick of the trio, whilst the forwards showed a great improvement in front of goal.
Result: York City, 5 goals; Denaby United, 0.
