Firbeck proved Denaby’s first victims of the season at Tickhill Square on Saturday after a full afternoon’s cricket which included some grand bowling by Ellis Robinson and a fine innings by Irving Greenwood, who not so long ago used to do this sort of thing more regularly than he has done of late.

Firbeck took first knock but made a none too promising start with two men back in the pavilion and only 28 runs on the board. Young Dickinson, the County Colt, did his share in creating these breaches in Firbeck’s vanguard and both Rodgers and Larke were clean bowled by him.

Subsequently Ellis Robinson commandeered the Denaby attack. He bowled 20 overs and two balls during the afternoon and claimed five Firbeck wickets for 67 runs. Five of his overs were maidens.

J. Hutchinson was the batsman who offered most resistance to Denaby, but he did not stay long after completing his half-century. However it was mainly owing to him that the score rose from 41 for 3 to 66 for 4 and 102 for 5.

The Firbeck tail stubbornly scraped together a few more runs to complete a total of 154.

Mountney had shared the brunt of the attack with Robinson and bowled well, though his only reward in 13 vigorous overs was 1 wicket for 31 runs. Dickinson’s two cost 31 also.

The distinction of being the first local pair to put up a three-figure first-wicket partnership was denied Ernest Wainwright and Greenwood by a single run, the Denaby vice-captain getting in front of a straight ball from Hutchinson with the home total at 99 and his own score one short of 30.

It was not to be Robinson’s day with the bat and he was caught with only a couple of runs to his credit. Dick Probert fared even worse, but Charlie Mountney settled down to help Greenwood to collect the necessary runs, carrying out his bat for a well-played 24 which included one hefty hit for six.

Greenwood’s 92 not out (the best feat with the bat in Saturday’s Council cricket by the way) was obtained in something under two hours and 52 of his runs came from boundary strokes.
