Conisbro’ Man Killed Two Days After Promotion

On Monday Mr. Albert Edward Jones (38), of Rowena Road, Conisbrough, commenced work as a sub-ganger at Conisbrough Railway Station. On Wednesday he was struck by a goods train travelling towards Mexborough and was fatally injured.
He began work on the railway in November, 1951, and worked as a platelayer on the Warnsworth Line Sidings until he was promoted sub-ganger at Conisbrough.
A married man with two children, Mr. Jones was working one hundred yards outside the station near a signal box on the Doncaster side when the mishap occurred.
During the last war he served with the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry in North Africa, Sicily and Italy, and was wounded in action in Italy.
After his demobilisation, he returned to Conisbrough Gasworks, where he had been employed before the war, but left to work at British Bemberg Ltd., Doncaster. Eventually he secured a job with British Railways.
Last year, with his wife and family—a boy, Allan (14), and a girl, Frances (11)—he planned to emigrate to Australia, but at the last minute decided not to go.
An inquest will be held this afternoon at Conisbrough Council Offices.
