Smart Stumping

Allen Excels for Denaby

Denaby beat Rossington by five wickets on a soft pitch that helped neither batsman nor bowler. There was no sting in the bowling and no fire in the batting. The only bright batting of the day was that of Ellis Robinson, the county colt, who was at the wicket just under half an hour for his 36, which included six fours. He was cut through playing forward to a ball from the left hand spin bowler, Clarkson, which upset his stumps. However, Robinson played a big part in winning the game, for he also did well with the ball, taking 4 for 39.

A contrast to Robinson’s batting was Greenwood’s. The latter was at the wicket an hour and a quarter for 27 runs, when he was out in the same way as Robinson. Out of the first 20 runs Greenwood had a single. Foster’s new bat did not bring him any luck and after scoring three he tipped one into the hands of Barratt.

Both Mountney and Pycroft played the bowling with ease. George Allen, Denaby’s clever wicket-keeper, claimed five victims, stumping two and catching the other three. A fine day’s work.

Six Rossington batsmen reached double figures, but only Widdison defied the bowling for long, carrying his bat for a useful 24. Apart from Robinson’s bowling, Mountney took 3 for 42 and Dickenson 2 for 12, while Wainwright had seven overs, of which five were maidens, securing one wicket for seven runs.

For Rossington, Chivers took 3 for 30, and Clarkson 2 for 25, while Blount, who did all the damage at Doncaster the previous week, was not successful. Scores:
