Thefts of Turnips At Denaby
Wm. Senior, Abednego Venables, and Wm. Hall (boys), the former hailing from Thrybergh, and the others from Denaby, were charged with stealing growing turnips at Denaby, on the 10th inst.
Police-constable Kendall deposed that, in consequence of having received complaints from a farmer, named James Braithwaite, he watched his field at Denaby, and on the day named, he saw the three defendants there. They came out of the field with three large turnips in their possession. He took their names, and stated that he should report them. The fences of the field had been repeatedly mended, but they were broken down almost directly.
The boys said they were after acorns.
The farmer having been called, valued the turnips at 1d. each. He did not wish to press the case.
Fined 6d. each, damage 1d. each, and costs 6s. each.
