A Dishonest Conisboro’ Servant

At Doncaster Police Court, on Tuesday, before Mr. G. B. C. Yarborough and Mr. W. J. Huntriss, Eliza Ann Howell, domestic servant, of Conisboro’, was charged with stealing jewellery, the property of Walter Sidgworth Housman, of New Conisboro’.

Mary Jane Housman, wife of the complainant, said that in June last she engaged the prisoner as a domestic servant. Shortly after she missed a gold dress ring (produced), gold earrings, etc. Witness blamed somebody else at first, and the prisoner encouraged that view by saying:

“You don’t know what she may have taken.”

Prisoner pretended to find the ring.

David Dunger, manager of a Conisboro’ pawnshop, stated that on the 13th inst. prisoner pledged the sheet (produced) for one shilling. On the 18th she took a dress ring, which he refused to take in.

Prisoner was bound over in her own recognizances to come up for judgment when called upon.
