Employer and Workmen Act
Denaby Men Summoned
For a breach of the Employer and Workmen Act, Benjamin Roberts, miner, of Denaby, Alfred Wilcman, miner, of Denaby, and Charles Kew, filler, of Denaby, were proceeded against.
Mr. W. M. Gichard prosecuted, and said the Colliery Company claimed 5/- damages by reason of the men having neglected or absented themselves from their work on November 19th, at the Denaby Main Colliery. On that day the defendants went to the colliery, and their respective working places were not ready owing to falls, and the men were then requested, in the ordinary course, to stand aside for a few minutes in the lamp cabin at the pit bottom until they could be consigned to other places. Instead of doing so, they managed to get out of the pit, along with the other men who were leaving at the end of the shift. On that day 17 per cent. of the workmen were absent on that particular shift.
The defendants, who did not appear, were each ordered to pay 5/- and the costs of the court.
