Cadeby Dismissals
160 And More To Come
Preference For Tenants
About 160 underground workers at Cadeby are under notice which expires next Tuesday, and there are more dismissals, both of underground and surface workers, to come at Cadeby and to a smaller extent at Denaby.
The dismissals are due to bad trade. “We have been carrying more men than we have work for,” explains the agent, Mr. B. H. Pickering, “and we cannot do it any longer.”
The Company are giving preference in the matter of employment to the tenants of their own housing estate, and the men who are now being dismissed are mostly resident in Mexborough, Swinton, Wath, and the Doncaster district—a policy which appears to be approved by the majority of the men employed at the collieries, ninety per cent. or more being resident in the immediate vicinity of the pits.
Asked as to prospects of re-employment, Mr. Pickering said he was unable to hold out any hope of this, though the Company, in common with everybody else, hoped for an improvement in the coal trade and an opportunity to re-engage men.
