Sterner Stuff for Upton
Fresh from their free-scoring feat at Allerton Bywater on Saturday, Upton encountered bowling of a different calibre when they met Denaby at Tickhill Square on Monday and were beaten by three wickets.
F. Hague, the century-maker of Saturday, fell an early victim to the Mountney-Allen combination with only a dozen runs to his credit, and thereafter Ellis Robinson got among the wickets. He had 6 for 54 when the Upton innings closed for 124 runs, only Dallas, J. C. Johnson and Grainger making anything of a stand for the visitors. Johnson, whose 43 was the best individual knock of the match, hit 7 fours and a six. He was also Upton’s most effective bowler and clean bowled the Denaby opening batsmen, Greenwood and Robinson. Wickets were going cheaply when Criddle came in and checked what threatened to become a collapse. The Denaby captain’s 24 was one of his best scores of the season and was made at a time when it was most needed. Charlie Mountney followed with an invaluable innings of 35 which put Denaby in sight of the victory which Dick Probert, aided by Archie Carlin, consummated. Mountney hit 6 fours and a six and Criddle reached the boundary four times. Johnson’s 4 for 46 was easily the best bowling performance for Upton. Scores:—
