Bid That Failed
Denaby Lose in Forcing Pace
Denaby were beaten on their own ground by Doncaster mainly through trying to force the pace with insufficient time at their disposal against two good bowlers and fielders who were always on their toes.
Doncaster opened with Wilkinson and Hutchinson, the former Brodsworth player and Derbyshire Colt, and Wilkinson survived an appeal for lbw in the first over from Robinson. At 20 Robinson tried a leg trap but did not meet with success. Dickenson relieved Mountney and at 40 Criddle made a double change, Wainwright taking over from Dickenson and Holland from Robinson. Mountney sent down an over to allow the two bowlers to change ends, but runs came steadily. Robinson returned for Wainwright at 76 and with his first delivery had Wilkinson caught. Wilkinson was fortunate to stay so long for Allen should have stumped him and run him out before he had scored 30.
With the addition of another run Mountney disposed of Fletcher, while Robinson dismissed Hutchinson, the hitter being caught by Wainwright. Allen stumped Thornton and caught Innis off Mountney, then Criddle smartly caught Bullard and Wright, close in, caught Hart. Thus Doncaster after making such a fine start had seven wickets down for 107. However, Davis, the Doncaster policeman, and Blamires put on 48 before Allen stumped the former for 28. Dickenson came on again and got Baker’s wicket in his first over. Blamires and Wills added 21 for the last wicket before Allen stumped the former. Allen had four victims and allowed no extras until the last over but one. Doncaster batted two hours 45 minutes, thus leaving Denaby with but two hours to get the runs.
Wainwright and Greenwood were uncomfortable from the start and their rate of scoring was very slow. At 31 Greenwood tried to pull Bullard to leg but Baker, standing well back, caught him. Wright went at the same total. Robinson disappointed, being out for five, and Denaby had lost three valuable wickets for 48. Wainwright and Foster hit out for a while until Foster skied a ball into the hands of Hutchinson at 69. Criddle scored two boundaries in the same over from Bullard. Hutchinson had Wainwright caught and bowled after being at the wicket 71 minutes for 24 runs. Hutchinson bowled Mountney for a “duck” but Allen and Jones played breezily, the former being eventually lbw. He scored 27 in a stand of 29. The last two men failed to score and Denaby were out for 127.
For Denaby, Mountney took 5 for 57, Robinson 3 for 49 and Dickenson 2 for 35. For Doncaster, Hutchinson took 5 for 40 and Bullard 4 for 58. Scores:
