Lapses and a Collapse
Brodsworth Lose Their Grip
Although Denaby beat Brodsworth by six wickets they did not at one time seem very favourably placed. Brodsworth, in the broiling sun, opened steadily, 30 minutes’ play producing less than 20 runs. Baker and Nutton being content to wait. However after 95 minutes Dickinson bowled Baker with only 52 runs on the board. Spencer and Nutton added another 47 for the second wicket and appeared well set when Holland came on for the first time at the tennis courts end and in his second over Wainwright took a low down catch to send Spencer back. Three wickets were down for 104 and the fourth fell at the same total. At 115 Holland, in the slips, caught Nutton, thus removing a great stumbling block. Nutton had been at the wicket 116 minutes for his 63 which included 6 fours. The remaining five wickets fell for 24 runs. Robinson bowled his first 20 overs for 42 runs without taking a wicket, but in his next five captured five wickets for another 20 runs. At 4-10 Brodsworth had one wicket down and at 4-42 their innings was over. Mountney had 2 for 21, Holland 1 for 11 and Dickinson 1 for 24.
Wainwright and Greenwood opened Denaby’s innings, the former scoring a boundary off the first ball. One run later he gave an easy chance that was not accepted and with only 18 on the board he had another catch dropped. These mistakes proved costly for Brodsworth, for Wainwright carried out his bat for 59, which included nine fours. Greenwood was bowled by Davis, the only dangerous Brodsworth bowler. Joe Wright was missed twice before he scored and again before he reached double figures but only made 11. Robinson, after scoring 5, had his leg stump knocked back by Davis. Foster had soon to be assisted back to the pavilion, a ball from Davis landing on his foot. Denaby four wickets down for 92 and then Mountney and Wainwright hit out to win the game without further loss. Mountney’s 33 not out was the best innings of the day and included 6 fours. Davis took 3 for 35 and Round 1 for 8. Scores:
