Church Parade
Opens Conisbrough Home Holidays
The Denaby and Conisbrough Holiday at Home Week opened on Sunday morning, when members of the local Civil Defence Services held a church parade, but the real holiday spirit was roused early on Monday morning when crowds assembled on the Denaby United football ground to witness the opening ceremony.
For four months a band of about forty voluntary helpers have worked hard to bring about the success of the effort, the chief organiser being Mr. K. Vickers. On Monday Col. Miller was introduced by Coun. R. H. Shephard, chairman of the committee, and opened the Week. Col. Miller said he appreciated the honour of being called upon to open the proceedings, and he felt that holidays at home were just as important as any other war-time service, for people were not hampering the production and transportation of war materials. The war news at present was very good, and we could all enjoy ourselves without interfering with the war effort.
Mr. H. Thirlwall, Surveyor to the Conisbrough Urban Council, associated himself with all Col. Miller had said, and appealed to the people of the urban district to help with the National Book Salvage drive, commencing Aug. 21st, and hoped that at least 1,500 books would be forthcoming from Conisbrough and Denaby.
The Rev. W. Thynne, Methodist minister, crowned the Holiday Queen (Miss Iris Smith). This was followed by judging the entrants in the carnival. Judges were Col. Miller, Mrs. Smethurst, Mrs. Dunn, Mrs. Pickett, Deaconess Ellis, and Mr. and Mrs. Thirlwall.
Prize-winners were: Tradesmen’s entry: 1 Appleyard and Jumbo, 2 Denaby and Cadeby Home Coal Cutting Committee, 3 H. Appleyard and Sons. Horsemen: 1 Edgar Allen’s, 2 Mr. Buckley. Tableaux on dray: 1, United Nations, arranged by Mrs. Gregory; 2, Munition Workers, arranged by George Day and Co.; 3, Hospital Collecting Bed, arranged by Mr. Buckley. Ladies’ comic: Margaret Sheard, Margery Best, Margery Jackson. Specials: Avis Hobson, Stanley Farr, Hubert Taylor, Eric Best. Prams: Mrs. Ward, Mrs. Fox, Mrs. Davies. Best decorated cycle: Leslie Vickers. Female impersonator: L. Best, E. Best, H. Pearson. Ladies’ neat costume: Imelda Gregory, Margaret Kaye, Patricia Bartram. Men’s neat costume: N. Marston, J. Allen, M. Carline. Men’s comic: L. Craven, Peter Gregory. Girls, 5 to 10: Ruby Taylor, P. Moss, M. Horner. Boys, 5 to 10: G. Moss, H. Eames, John Gregory. Girls, 10 to 15: I. Gregory, M. Lawrance, R. Atkinson. Boys, 10 to 15: W. Bartram, H. Mee, B. Pearson. Dog turnout: J. Wilkes, Mrs. Davies, J. Clark.
In the afternoon all the competitors assembled and, headed by the S.J.A.B. Band, under Mr. R. Whittington, paraded the streets of Denaby and Conisbrough, where collections were taken for the Fullerton Hospital. There were many collectors for the collecting competition, which was won by: 1 F. J. Prince, 2 M. E. Carline, 3 J. Young. All the prizes were presented at a fancy dress and masked carnival held in the Miners’ Welfare Hall.
There was another big crowd at the cricket match on Tuesday, reported elsewhere in this issue, and this was followed by a variety concert on the cricket ground.
Five-A-Side Football
Five-a-side football was introduced at Tickhill Square on Wednesday, when a full day’s programme was arranged. Eight teams took part. In the final G. Shephard’s team beat C. Shephard’s team 3–2. Winners of the long kick were: 1 B. Cory, 2 C. Shephard, 3 J. Allott. Winners of the long throw were: 1 G. Shephard, 2 R. Cory, 3 W. Green.
Baby Show
There were over 180 competitors in the Baby Show held in the Denaby Miners’ Welfare Institute on Wednesday. Judges were Dr. and Mrs. Penman (Wakefield), Miss Brighton (Matron at the Fullerton Hospital) and Nurses Bailey and Leonard.
