Cricket Stars at Denaby
Holidays at Home Fixture
Many years have elapsed since Denaby cricketers made an appearance at Denaby, but Tuesday was the first occasion on which England players have turned out on the ground to help in raising funds for the Fullerton Hospital in a match organised in connection with the holidays at home week. The teams included three England players and nine county players. The organisers, with Mr. J. Richards as organising secretary, and Mr. J. C. Humphries as general secretary, had got together two well balanced teams sponsored by Roy Genders and T. D. Hounsfield, the latters sides being captained by Ellis Robinson, the former Denaby player now with Yorkshire, and the organisers’ efforts were well rewarded both by the cricket and the financial return.
Ellis Robinson led out his team first followed by Roy Genders and W. Keeton. The arrival on the field of Wilfred Rhodes to act as umpire was applauded and with the score at 32 Pope was relieved by Goddard to allow Pope to bowl at the opposite end. Keeton, who had his fingers rattled by Pope was l.b.w. to Pope’s next delivery with the total at 37. Genders had hit Goddard out of the field for six, but with the score at 53 Dempsey was bowled by Pope. With no further addition to the total Genders was stumped by Beet. Marsh took over from Pope while Goddard kept on to get C. Genders l.b.w. at 66. Cory, a local player, took the ball and a big shout went up when in his second over he got Lawrence’s wicket. The total reached 89 for 6 at the lunch interval. On resuming Robinson had a spell of bowling. He got two wickets in quick time Beet stumping both victims to bring the innings to a close at 152.
Hounsfield’s XI made a poor start, losing three quick wickets, but Pope and Gladwin stopped the rot. With Pope out of the way Robinson came in but did not stay long. Goddard joined Gladwin and the latter retired after scoring 51 and Goddard finished with 47 to end the innings at 188 for 9. Allen, the Denaby wicketkeeper claimed three victims.
Best bowling for Roy Genders’ team were Voce’s three for 54 and Wardle’s two for 15, and for Hounsfield’s XI Pope’s two for 18, Goddard’s 2 for 25, Marsh’s 2 for 42 and Robinson’s 2 for 30. Scores:

A mock auction followed the match at which a bottle of sherry realised £8 11s. and a fruit and flower stand over £4. Mr. C. B. Webster was the auctioneer. Mr. A. M. Carlin and Mr. E. Wolstenholme were the commentators during the match.
