Conisborough School Board
The usual monthly meeting of the Conisborough School Board was held last night, there being present Messrs. Dufton (chairman), Pagdin, Norwood, Whitfield, Kilner, Harrison (clerk), and Barlow (attendance officer).
The minutes of last meeting having been confirmed, Mr. Barlow submitted his report upon the attendance. He said that he had issued about 29 warnings, but that the absentees were, in nearly every case, ill with the fever.
The question of Mr. Barlow’s salary being considered, he stated that at present he made monthly visits only, in accordance with his arrangement with the Board, and that he could make weekly visits only on his wages being raised by £4. Mr. Whitfield contended that two days per week were quite sufficient for the performance of the duties of visiting, and the present remuneration which was equal to 5s. per week which was quite adequate. At the same time he admitted that Mr. Barlow had done his work well. It was resolved that Mr. Barlow’s salary be not raised.
Mr. Pagdin reported that he had attended to the drain and water tank as requested at the last meeting and that a good job had been made of them.
Regarding the letting of the schoolroom to the Chrysanthemum Society, Mr. Whitfield proposed and Mr. Pagdin seconded that the action of the Clerk in letting the schoolroom on this occasion be confirmed, but that in future, the permission of the Board be obtained before letting same during school hours. Carried unanimously.
The question of the teachers’ application for increase of salaries being the next item on the agenda, Mr. Whitfield proposed that the press now retire, not, he explained, because he was afraid of the press, but because he thought it was in the interests of the public that this question be not discussed in public. The proposition being unanimously carried our representative accordingly withdrew.
