Mexborough & Swinton Times – Friday 10 November 1893
Wm. Ashmore, carter, Rotherham, was summoned for hawking coal without weighing instruments at Conisborough, on the 27th October.
P.C. Peckitt deposed to seeing the defendant hawking the coal from door to door on the date in question, and he had no weighing machine. There was a difference of two stone in one bag.
James Richardson, joiner, Denaby, said on the day named he bought one hundredweight of coal from defendant, but returned it on account of its bad quality. He never saw any weighing machine.
Defendant pleaded guilty, but said that he was not a coal dealer, and therefore he did not know any rules about it.
Defendant was fined 10s. and 16s. 6d. costs.
