Without a Ticket at Conisboro’
Fredk. Tootle, who said he hailed from Leicester, was charged at Doncaster, on Tuesday, with having travelled on the Great Central Railway between Sheffield and Conisboro’ without a ticket with intent to defraud. He was further charged with having used abusive language.
Charles Richards, stationmaster at Conisboro’, deposed that on the previous Saturday, on the arrival of the 10.26 p.m. train from Sheffield, his attention was drawn to the prisoner, who was in a third-class compartment without a ticket.
Witness questioned him, and he said his ticket had been collected at the last station, Mexboro’. At witness’s request prisoner left the train, and threw his cap at witness, at the same time using bad language.
P.C. Thompson was on the platform, and prisoner struck him in the face and had to be handcuffed.
For the first offence he was fined 20s., including costs, and for the second 5s. and costs, or seven days’ imprisonment in each case.
