Damaging Growing Barley at Denaby.
Joseph Robinson, miner, Edward Baker, Wm. Brough, Thomas Glennings, pony drivers, and David Hewitt, miner, all of Denaby, were summoned for damaging growing barley and a quick-set hedge, at Denaby, on the 31st July.
Mr. W. Baddiley prosecuted.
P.C. Ramsden stated that he was on duty near the Denaby cemetery, on the above date, when he saw the defendants enter a field of barley belonging to Mr. Walter John Robinson, and trample a considerable quantity of it down. They then broke through a quick-set hedge, belonging to Mr. Boedin James Clarkson, making several gaps in it.
Mr. Robinson and Mr. Clarkson spoke to having had considerable harm done to their crops and hedges, and the damage in each case this time was 5s.
Most of the defendants pleaded that they thought there was a right of way through the field, but the Bench fined each of them 2s. 6d., 6s. 6d. costs, and 1s. damage.
