Colliery Prosecutions From Denaby.

More judgment summonses having relation to the late Denaby strike were heard. Ben Raybould, a miner, of Thickleton, being the first defendant.

Mr. W. M. Gichard, solicitor, Rotherham, prosecuted, and stated that the claim was for £5 damages and 7s. 6d. costs on an order made by the magistrates, on July 19th, 1902. He (defendant) was earning £1 7s. 8d. a week.

Mr. Long proved the case, stating that no payment had been made.

Mr. Gichard asked for a commitment, to be suspended so long as the defendant paid 5s. a month.

This order was made, and also in the cases of Wm. Froggett, alias Collins, a miner, of Mexboro’, and James Dainty, also a Mexboro’ miner, who were similarly summoned and appeared.

Wm. Slater, miner, of Mexboro’, was summoned by the company for having committed a breach of special rule 99 in the Denaby mine, on the 3rd August.

Defendant appeared and pleaded guilty.

Mr. Gichard said the offence consisted of taking matches into the mine. He would like to remind the defendant that it was a fiery seam of coal.

Defendant was fined 20s., including costs.

Fred Young, a driver, of Hexthorpe, was summoned for a breach of special rule 66 for not having attached to a run of corves a back stay or drag.

Mr. W. M. Gichard pointed out the prevalence of the offence.

Defendant was fined 5s. and costs.

The following persons were summoned for similar offences: J. Creswick, driver, 5s. and 13s. 6d. costs; R. Laurence, driver, of Denaby, 20s. and costs; Richard Watson, driver, Conisboro’, 5s. and 13s. 6d. costs; and Joseph Hadley, driver, Denaby, 5s. and 11s.
