“Big Entry Gang”
Denaby Miners’ Gambling School
Reference to “the big entry gang” at Denaby was made at Doncaster on Tuesday when eight Denaby miners were summoned for gaming by tossing with coins on 9th August.
William Brown was fined 40s. for gaming and 10s. for using obscene language, John Burns 10s. for gaming, George A. Simpson, William Mannion and Ronald L. Bingham 30s. for gaming, Matthew C. Noble 30s. for gaming and 10s. for using obscene language, Frank Wileman 30s. for gaming and 10s. for using violent and abusive language, and Cyril Lunn 20s. for gaming.
Inspector Wolfe said this gambling school was in the middle of Denaby where four streets met, and there was an entry. There was a gang who called themselves “the big entry gang,” and gambling went on regularly. They had touts out which made it difficult for the police. The residents near by were pestered, but were afraid to complain for fear of reprisals.
