Surprise For Gainsboro’
Gainsboro’ 0, Denaby 0
Denaby created a surprise by playing Gainsboro’ Trinity to a goalless draw, this being a fitting result to a keen game at Gainsboro’ on Saturday. Astle, in the Denaby goal, was full of confidence throughout, and Taylor found Woodhouse a capable partner. Crossley, the new right-half, distributed the ball intelligently, and Ralph Burkinshaw was a great schemer and had many tussles with Bratley. Fred Smith played a sound game but had his work cut out in holding the speedy Kirk. Neither Lowe nor Mugglestone were comfortable in their first half positions; the second half change was more effective. Lowe combined better with Barry, always a dangerous winger. With more steadiness Jack Huck would have given Denaby both points. Machin was a trier at outside-left but lacked finishing power. The Gainsboro’ defence was always sound. Ross, Wilkins and Bratley being prominent. Stanyon was their best forward.
In the first minute Huck raced through and when Mobbs advanced shot against the bar. Gainsboro’ transferred play, only for Denaby to make a swift reply, Lowe testing Mobbs. Gainsboro’ forced the pace but Taylor and Crossley were very effective against Murfin and Stanyon. Gainsboro’ had a chance when Taylor brought down his namesake just outside the penalty area, but Astle saved Bratley’s shot. Both sides strove hard for a goal but neither defence was penetrated.
