Breezy Bentley Batting

Denaby found in Bentley foemen worthy of their steel when the teams met at Tickhill Square on Saturday. There was no suspicion of “sitting on the splice” about Bentley’s reply to Denaby’s challenging declaration at 215 for 9 wickets. Free and hard hitting by the first four visiting batsmen gave their side a 7 wickets victory with eight minutes to spare. Denaby made a much better score than at first seemed within their compass, Dick Probert, Holland, and Allen being mainly responsible after the accredited batsmen had failed to do themselves justice. The home side had six wickets down for 77 but the seventh did not fall until the total had reached 138 and Allen and Holland made a timely last wicket stand worth over 50 runs. Though Denaby topped the 200, Sensical had the creditable bowling figures of 6 for 54.

Slater and Bunting scored steadily from the start of Bentley’s innings and the 100 was reached in 72 minutes. Chambers and Maddison helped to force home the advantage with a third wicket partnership of 102. Chambers and Bunting, both of whom passed the half-century, hit 11 and 9 fours respectively, and with only three wickets down Bentley passed the Denaby total. Scores:
