Help For Cripples’ Home

Generous Gesture at Conisbrough

Conisbrough Section of the National Association of Women’s Clubs on Monday presented to the matron of Hesley Hall Home for crippled children, Miss G. Hancock, £40 5s., the proceeds of a bazaar recently held in Conisbrough Welfare Institute.

Miss Hancock explained that when an authority decided to send a child to Hesley Hall it contributed for the upkeep of the child. “This only provides the bread and butter,” said the matron, “it is charitable efforts such as this which provide the jam.”

Hesley Hall, opened two years ago, accommodates 50 children, between the ages of five years and eleven. “Some of the worst cripples in the country” Miss Hancock said.

Miss Hancock criticised the apathy of the public when she said, “More people should wake up and help these unfortunate young people to become useful in the world. Ordinary people don’t seem to realise there are others far worse off than themselves.”

Miss Hancock concluded, “I do not know whether the school will grow, but I feel that such homes are very necessary.”

At the presentation she expressed heartfelt thanks to the Conisbrough Women’s Club, and Mrs. M. Hanby, Conisbrough Secretary, expressed the club’s hope that the money would be used to provide a holiday for some of the children at the home.
