The Denaby Powder Works — Sale Proposals
The annual meeting of the Fortes Powder and Explosives Company, Limited, whose only English factory is at Denaby, was held in London on Monday, under the presidency of Mr. D. F. Carmichael; and in the course of a somewhat stormy discussion the Earl of Denbigh said with regard to the question of the Denaby works the shareholders were aware that the sum of £28,000 was spent on them, but he was afraid that because such a considerable sum was spent it by no means followed that the works were at the time the company took them over worth the amount.
The Denaby business had not been a success, and the great coal strike had had no inconsiderable effect in bringing the result. He proposed that they should sell their Belgian business and if they could also get a substantial offer in cash for the Denaby factory he believed it would be to their advantage to take it.—In the end the directors consented to the appointment of a committee to confer with them as to the proposed sales.
