Denaby v. Hoyland Silkstone
Hoyland Silkstone Finished
Hoyland Silkstone finished their season in the Mexboro’ League with a draw at Denaby, and accordingly score a total of 32 points, while Denaby and Cadeby, who also brought their League programme to a conclusion by the same result, raised their score to 29 points. Hoyland Silkstone have not, however, gained the championship yet, for it is open to Hickleton Main, who have now 28 points with three matches to play, to make 34 points. There was very little to choose between the two teams on Saturday.
Hoyland Silkstone batted first, and made 153. Fred Bamforth playing a good innings of 47, while Moss made 28, and Billy Bamforth got 21. To this Denaby responded with 93 for five wickets, and so, on paper, and, if anything, slightly the better of the draw.
At one time it looked as if Hoyland would gain the full points, for they had four of their opponents out for 60. Knowles and Butler, however, got together and defied every effort to separate them, and when time arrived the Platts Common team had to rest satisfied with a solitary point. Scott, Bury, “Crick” Smith, Knowles and Butler all reached double figures, Knowles being top scorer with 21 not out.
