Woman’s Shock at Husband’s Death

A painful feature of a compensation case arising out of the Cadeby explosion was the recital of the fact that a woman upon hearing of her husband’s death received such a shock as to necessitate her detention for a time at the Wadsley Asylum.

The plaintiff in the case was Blanche Milburn, of Denaby, and she applied to His Honour to vary an award made at the December court with respect to £300 paid into court in regard to her husband’s death in the terrible explosion at Cadeby.

An order had been made appointing an uncle, Leonard Stocks, as guardian of her child, Mary Winifred, the mother being at that time in the Wadsley Asylum owing to the shock received through her husband’s death.

His Honour had allowed £100 to the mother and £200 to the child. The judge was now asked for £10 down on behalf of the mother in weekly payments of 10s., in addition to the 5s. ordered to be paid to Stocks, on behalf of the child.

The Doncaster Guardians asked for a payment out of the order of £28 for the maintenance of the woman while in the asylum.

Mr. A. Raley opposed this application by the Guardians on the ground that it could not be enforced against the money in court, and on the suggestion of His Honour the widow consented to £8 being paid to the Guardians in full settlement of the claim.

Mr. Montagu Nicholson, who represented the Guardians, accepted this, and the award was varied accordingly.
