Conisboro’ Parish Council

Some Breezy Exchanges

Urban Powers Committee’s Recommendations

Application to Be Made

The monthly meeting of the Conisboro’ Parish Council was held in the Station Road Schools on Wednesday evening. Mr. W. Appleyard presiding.

Defective Drain

The agent to Lord and Lady Yarborough, Mr. W. H. Cole, wrote complaining about a defective drain on the road near the school. Surface water ran on to the land.

It was stated that the Council should have written and complained to the Rural District Council.

Not Keen

Mr. R. Williamson wrote declining to accept office of councillor in place of Mr. H. Baker, resigned. Mr. V. Rose also wrote declining office in place of Mr. H. L. Smethurst.

The Chairman: They are apparently not keen for membership.

Messrs. W. H. Barwell and R. Troughton, the next on the list, were invited to be councillors.

Breeze

Mr. Hill reported on the condition of a footpath leading down to Ferry Terrace, and this led to a somewhat sharp discussion as to who appeared at an inspection by the sub-committee.

Mr. Wells said his opinion was that those people who were supposed to be interested in working class welfare did not care unless there was some pay at the end of it.

The Chairman: I think that is out of order. We all work for nothing.

Mr. Hill: It is the custom of some people to measure other folk’s stuff with their own yard sticks. People who speak such things are subject to such actions themselves.

The Chairman said there had been some misunderstanding as to where the sub-committee should meet.

Mr. Urch: Let me tell Mr. Wells that if there was pay at the end of this job the labour men would not be there. Someone else would have the job.

Mr. Wells declared that no one turned up but himself.

Messrs. Hill and Bashforth replied that they inspected the path together.

Mr. Wells Withdraws

This matter was referred to at a later stage in the meeting, and Mr. Hill asked, through the Chairman, that Mr. Wells should withdraw his remarks about payment. It was a false remark to make. He was not going to have it said about him that he was not interested in the matter unless he was paid. It was a false remark.

Mr. Wells: I shall withdraw nothing. I said if there had been payment at the end of it, perhaps we should have got them there.

Mr. Hill: It was sarcasm.
